Have You Ever Gone Shopping “Just to Look”?

Comic of cartoon shopping bags in a bright fashion store

We have all said it: “I am only looking today.” This clip turns that famous lie into a little comedy. It starts in a bright outlet store, among mannequins in dark autumn outfits, with a woman casually pointing at the displays like a polite museum visitor.

Just looking. Definitely just looking. Maybe touching this fringed skirt. Maybe trying those sunglasses. Then, with each cut, her outfit changes and suddenly she is wearing what the mannequins wore a moment ago. The mannequins, standing stiffly beside her, seem to be getting increasingly suspicious.

By the middle of the clip she is in a black knit dress with silver studs, posing next to the shelves as if she owns the place. By the end, a fluffy brown faux-fur coat appears and a row of large shopping bags lines up on the floor. So much for just looking.

The joke works because it is so honest. Outlets are designed for exactly this. The prices feel like a bargain, the lights are flattering and the next nice thing is always one rail away. Plans melt faster than ice cream in July.

If you want to keep your wallet safe, a few classic tricks help: go with a list, set a budget before entering and leave the card at home if you really mean “just looking”. Or simply accept the inevitable and enjoy the shopping spree.

Either way, the mannequins will be watching. And judging by their faces, they have seen this movie many times before.
